28 September - 6 October 2017
Prof Dr Jagtar Kaur Chawla was at the University of Primorska, Koper, Slovenia, from 28 September to 6 October 2017 for the Erasmus+ programme. She visited the University as part of the faculty exchange program as a visiting faculty and did 12 hours of teaching. Her sessions focused on areas of socio-cultural background of India, communication and media in India, building global competencies and multilingualism in Indian Cinema. An important element in the sessions was a comparison between Indian student responses to questionnaires on inter-cultural sensitivity and those of Slovenian students. The international students found the videos and interactive modes used in the sessions particularly engaging.
Under the ambit of the programme Prof Chawla also participated in the MELDEC 17 - Multilingual Education in Linguistically Diverse Contexts - International Conference held at the University of Primorska, Koper on 29 and 30 September 2017. The event was attended by 54 participants from 22 countries mostly from Europe, as well as from USA, UK, Japan and India.
The topic of her presentation was Interplay of Cultural and Linguistic Crosscurrents in Bollywood: Understanding the Nature and Role of Multilingualism in Indian Cinema. The paper was authored by Dr Nidhi nema and dr Jagtar Kaur Chawla and involved an analysis of translingualism in two popular Hindi movies "Piku" which uses a mix of Hindi, English and Bengali and "Udata Punjab" that was a mix of Hindi, English and Punjabi, along with accentual variants in both. The paper highlighted the genetic wisdom and socio-cultural ideologies of harmonious existence of multilingualism in Indian Cinema and how the linguistic aspect of this cinematic art upholds the concept of 'unity without uniformity and diversity without fragmentation'.
5 February to 19 February 2018
Dr Neva Cebron, Professor of Linguistics and Intercultural Studies at the University of Primorska, Koper, Slovenia, visited BSSS as part of the European Union Erasmus+ project, in the capacity of an Administrator and Faculty, from 5 February - 19 February 2018.
Meeting with the Principal
During her visit she had a series of meetings and interactions with the Principal, the Research Cell members, the teaching staff and students. Discussions with the Principal, Dr Fr John P J were mostly centred round strengthening the ties between BSSS and University of Primorska. Exchange of ideas and experience in several areas of cooperation, such as collaborative research, student and teacher exchanges, and setting up joint study programmes at various levels were discussed. We also looked at possibilities of student exchange in Management and Travel and Tourism, as both these programmes are common between University of Primorska and BSSS.
Interaction with Teachers and Research Cell
The session with teachers focused on three Projects followed by open house where teachers asked questions on European approaches to teaching and research. The interaction with the Research Cell team consisted of discussions on areas / topics of research, as well as the dynamics of preparing research proposals for international projects where several partners are involved. Teachers had the opportunity to take a close look at some of the successful proposals for research bids within Europe.
Workshop for Students
Dr Cebron also conducted two workshops on 7 and 13 February, for a group of 35 advanced students of the Humanities group, on the theme of 'Aiming towards Building Global Readiness and Competancy based on Non-Essentialist Approaches'. The core theme of the first workshop was Exploring Intercultural Narratives, and the second was Anti-Discrimination Study Circle. The topics were approached based on learning materials developed within the IEREST project, EU's Life Long Learning Programme. The students got to learn about the difference between essentialist and non-essentialist approaches to culture, and the single story concept.
This is a big step towards strengthening our global ties and collaborations and enhancing the international exposure of our teachers and students.
