17th December, 2022 - The Department of Computer Application in collaboration with BSSS Incubation Centre organized a three-day workshop on 3D Printing technology from 15th to 17th December 2022 in Computer Lab-I BSSS College Main Building. The workshop was delivered by Dr. Udeep Chawla from Elpis Analytix and detailed on technologies of 3D printer, 3D scanner, 3D printing pen, Computer-aided design, IPR, Arduino, IoT and an Idea Pitching Competition with hands on training. For the prototype presentation/idea pitch competition a total of Rupees Ten Thousand was announced as the cash prizes and the team winning first will be awarded Rupees Five Thousand, Rupees Three Thousand for the team winning second and Rupees Two Thousand for the team winning third.
Ms. Geetanjali Khambra (Asst. Professor, Department of Computer Applications) and Mr. Arun Panicker (Manager, BSSS Incubation Centre) were coordinating for organizing the workshop with support from Ms. Prabha Biju (HoD, Department of Computer Applications) and Dr. Smitha Pillai (Nodal Officer, BSSS Incubation Centre)
Registrations were invited for participation in the workshop which was promoted through social media and whatsapp groups for which total 111 registrations were received from students of various departments.
Day-1: First day of the workshop commenced with Arun Panicker welcoming and introducing the expert resource person Dr. Udeep Chawla to the participants of the workshop. In the first session of the day Dr. Udeep briefed on the content and what can be expected from the three-day workshop. Then he briefed about 3D printing technology with various types of printers available in the market, substances used, scope & job market and he gave a live demonstration of a 3D printer. With the live demonstration the students were exhilarated to get introduced to one of the best innovations in the last decade. He also exhibited some of the models that he had printed with this technology. In the second session, he introduced students to Tinkercad which is a free computer aided design (CAD) web application. The students were taught on how they can design a 3D model with the help of various tools available in CAD. These prototype or product designs can be exported and saved in a computer which can be printed by using 3D printer. Then he introduced the students to 3D printing pen and briefed about the technology behind this. The students also got an opportunity for hands on training on the printing pen by which they made various designs.
Thereafter he also explained how an innovator can secure an IPR using the 3D printing technology. In the final minutes of the first day of the workshop he gave instructions for the idea pitching competition which is on the third and final day and asked the participants to form a team for the same.
Day-2: Second day of the workshop commenced with the introduction of 3D scanner. Dr. Udeep briefed the students about 3D scanning technology and how the technology is useful for 3D printing. Dr. Udeep also introduced to various softwares that are used in 3D scanning and also practically demonstrated the use of 3D scanner, as few faculty members and the student participants had them 3D scanned. Few participants also got hands on experience with the softwares that are used in 3D scanning, by scanning faculties and other participants. Participants were designing the prototypes of their ideas using tinkercad to be presented for the competition, also taking guidance from the expert and the faculties.
Day-3: On the third and final day of the workshop, the day was dedicated to the Idea Pitching Competition. Fourteen teams presented their idea/prototype to win the prizes. The competition was judged by Dr. Udeep Chawla along with the faculty team of Ms. Geetanjali Khambra and Mr. Arun Panicker. After all the fourteen teams had presented their idea in front of the panels, the result was announced by Ms. Prabha Biju as per the judgement of the panels. Ms. Prabha Biju also thanked Dr. Udeep Chawla for delivering the erudite workshop which was relished by the participants. She also thanked the organizing team which consisted of Ms. Geetanjali Khambar and the team of BSSS Incubation Centre which is led by Dr. Smitha Pillai. Out of the fourteen team, the team of Simra Khan and Abdullah Khan won the first prize for presenting the idea of Ladies Footwear design which they had designed the prototype and presented through a video presentation. The second prize was won by the team of Amisha Patel, Nandini Mishra, Manyata Verma and Narayan Gupta; who presented their idea on food delivery. The third prize was one by Dhruv Raj Singh who presented the idea alone and the idea was based on a township model with solar panels. The workshop winded up with a group photograph of our Vice-Principal Dr. Sr. Soniya Kurian with Dr. Udeep Chawla, organizing team and the participants.
