An Overview

Established in the year 1972, the Department of Humanities is the oldest department of the college. The department started with the subjects Psychology, English Literature, Sociology, Economics and Social Work. Later on following subjects were added like Political Science (1989), Philosophy and Public Administration (2014) and recently History & got introduced in the year 2018. Mathematics as an optional subject has been introduced in the session 2019 - 2020.

Our Vision is to offer the best for the society by imparting high quality education to stimulate in the students a spirit of inquiry and desire to gain knowledge and skills that can enrich their lives in future.

Mission:

The Department of Humanities is dedicated to enlightening students about the world and communicate effectively in their professional and personal lives.

The departments’ interdisciplinary approaches make students aware of the connections between the humanities and other disciplines.

To adapt and introduce streams, programs and pedagogy to cater the emerging paradigms of an evolving society. 

Course Structure: At undergraduate level following subjects are offered:

  • Psychology

  • English Literature

  • Political Science

  • Sociology

  • Social Work

  • Philosophy

  • Public Administration

  • History

  • Mathematics

A student can choose 3 subjects. The Foundation course papers are compulsory in all the years.

PG Courses.

  • MA Sociology
  • MA Political Science.

Modern Teaching Aids

  • Teaching aids are used by a teacher to enhance and enliven the classroom interactions. Various audiovisual teaching aids such as videos and guest lectures are used along with traditional aids such as blackboards. Modern devices are also in usage such as tablets, projectors, YouTube content, Ted Talks, Live Streams, Power Point slideshows etc.

  • The staff and the students can access the computer lab as well the research centre which is equipped with computers with internet facility and relevant books and journals. This helps the teachers to prepare themselves for their lectures and keep themselves updated with latest changes and information about their respective subjects.

  • Movies & Documentaries on relevant subjects matterare screened to provide a better understanding of the subject specific topics. The students of humanities are able to relate themselves with these issues in a better manner as they get an audio visual exposure.

  • The humanities department has a library with a good collection of reference books for the staff as well as students. The library is constantly updated by adding new books and the students are encouraged to make full use of this faculty.

  • The department also established the Psychology labin 1987 which is equipped with latest tools and equipments so as to enrich and improve the knowledge and skills of the students in administering and interpreting various test.

  • Field Visits:The department of humanities organises field visits, exposure visits and training programmes for the students so as to enhance the knowledge and to provide them with experience outside their classroom activities.

Major Activities of the Department of Humanities

  • Department of Humanities celebrates various days like Humanitarian day, Right to Information day, Philosophy day, Constitution day, Green day to raise the awareness of students regarding the significance of celebrating these important days. International Day for Eradication of Poverty is proposed for the current session.

  • Various visits has been organised by the department to give practical exposure to the students like visit to Vidhan Sabha (State Legislative Assembly), Panchayat, paliament, NGO, Tribal Museum, Heritage Walk. Every year two day training session is conducted at  Kunjilal Dubey Rashtriya Sansadiya Vidyapeeth where renowed experts from different fields like IAS, IPS, IFS officers deliver a lecture on various topics to train the students about the working of Parliamentary procedures. A Rural Immersion programme to understand the functioning of the rural economy has been proposed for the current academic session.

  • Department is also active in organising various Workshops, National & International Seminar, Symposium, Panel Discussions to discuss issues and problems of present day world and also to develop the skills of teachers that is required for the professional growth.

  • CCEs are conducted by each subject teacher as a part of internal assessment. Innovative presentations such as presentation with the help of short films made by the students, enactment of theoretical topics etc are encouraged.

  • Remedial and Bridge classes are held for students in order to give them a better understanding of the subject and also help them in improving their skills.

Students' Achievements

The Department of Humanities has had the tradition of facilitating students for their academic performance. This has been done through running trophies and shields in the name of people who have contributed to the growth of the department.

According to the reports available with teachers of the department, the students of humanities are employed at colleges, schools and universities as teachers. Some have cleared the civil services examination, and some others are employed by corporate houses in India and abroad. Some others have made a name for themselves in the field of business.
