BSSS Hosts Transformative Rural Immersion Camp in Khandwa

In an exemplary display of commitment to social welfare and community engagement, the Department of Social Work at Bhopal School of Social Sciences organized an impactful Rural Immersion Camp in Khandwa. The seven-day endeavor, from March 5th to March 11th, 2024, saw enthusiastic participation from students pursuing Bachelor of Social Work (BSW), Master of Social Work (MSW), and Bachelor of Arts (BA) degrees.
The camp served as a dynamic platform for students to gain firsthand insights into the rural and tribal villages of Khandwa district, delving into various facets of community development and social welfare. Guided by experienced faculty members, the students embarked on a journey of discovery, exploring the works of numerous non-governmental organizations (NGOs) dedicated to education, health, women empowerment, livelihood, environmental conservation, kitchen gardening, nutrition, organic farming, and the innovative micro-solar dome project.
What set this camp apart was the inclusion of a certificate program on Community Participation and Engagement, providing students with valuable skills and knowledge to effectively engage with and empower communities. Alongside their visits, students were immersed in sessions delivered by esteemed individuals, including Liju Varghese from Piramal Foundation, Fr. Jayan Alex from Khandwa Diocese Social Service Society, and Mr. Pankaj Sanwale from MPSACS Targeted Intervention Project.
Throughout the camp, students actively engaged in participatory rural appraisal, transact walks, and resource mapping exercises, gaining a deep understanding of community dynamics and needs. Additionally, they conducted surveys in two villages, focusing on antenatal and postnatal care, education, nutrition, agriculture, and healthcare.
On the occasion of International Women's Day, students organized a rally in Khandwa, shedding light on pressing issues such as dowry, abuse, and female foeticide. They also performed skits and puppet shows on women's empowerment, highlighting the importance of gender equality and women's rights in rural communities.
Special acknowledgments were extended to organizations such as KDSS, SPANDAN, Narmada BachaoAndolan, and Sampark - Educate Girls for their invaluable support during field visits. Notable attendees from the Department of Social Work included Mr. Piyush Porwal, Mr. Vinish Shaji, Ms. Stella Elsa Samuel, Mr. Atul Vishvakarma, and Mr. Ram Narayan, alongside dedicated students who actively participated in every aspect of the camp.
The Rural Immersion Camp in Khandwa stands as a testament to the dedication of the Bhopal School of Social Sciences towards holistic education and community development. As students return enriched and inspired, equipped with newfound knowledge and skills, it is anticipated that they will continue to champion social causes and drive positive change in society.
